Introducing 2015 Networked Readiness Index

We have to be familiar of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). ICTs are changing the landscape of our societies and economies these days. Economies around the world are besieged to ensure that growth is equitable for the entire population. With this, ICTs have a great impact as it can act as a vector of transformation and social development by enhancing our access to basic services, improving connectivity and generating employment opportunities.

The ICT revolution around the world was pulsed by the Global Information Technology Report which was published by the World Economic Forum. The Global Information Technology Report, World Economic Forum, INSEAD and Cornell University measured drivers of ICT revolution in the form of Networked Readiness Index (NRI). There were 143 economies included. The economies are classified based on its income level and the group.

The income level follows the classification provided by the World Bank. The group on the other hand follows the classification provided by the International Monetary Fund. Here are the economies included in the top list:

  • Singapore: It is no surprise that Singapore made it to number one considering that we were at number two last year. We are valued at 6.0. Our income level is High Income (HI) and we belong to the group of Advanced (ADV) economies.
  • Finland: Finland is at number two this year down from number one from last year. The economy is valued at 6.0 and their income level is HI-OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). Finland belongs to the group of ADV economies.
  • Sweden: Sweden is at number three. The economy is valued at 5.8 and their income level is HI-OECD. They also belong to the group of ADV economies.
  • Netherlands: Netherlands is at number four. The economy is valued at 5.8 and their income level is HI-OECD. There is no doubt that Netherlands belong to ADV economies.
  • Norway: Norway made it to number five again (last year it was also in the same spot). Like Sweden and Netherlands, Norway is valued at 5.8. Its income level is HI-OECD and it belongs to the group of ADV economies.
  • Switzerland: Switzerland is valued at 5.7. Their income level is HI-OECD and they belong to the group of ADV economies.
  • United States: Who would forget the United States? They are valued at 5.6. Its income level is HI-OECD and it belongs to the group of ADV economies.
  • United Kingdom: The United Kingdom, like United States is valued at 5.6. The income level is HI-OECD and it also belongs to the ADV group.

Luxembourg and Japan follow after United Kingdom with value of 5.6. The income levels are HI-OECD and still belong to the ADV group. The economies with the least network readiness include Haiti, Mauritania, Myanmar, Angola, Burundi, Guinea and Chad.
