The Best Survival Video Games

The number of post-apocalyptic and zombie movies and books may be finally dwindling, but shooting the undead or invading alien species can be fun if you’re bored. Some of these titles do not require any skill except how fast you can point and shoot, but others need more resourcefulness from gamers.

Here are the best survival games you should try.

The Forest (2014)

As the title suggests, the game is set in a forest island where the player controls one of the characters who survived a plane crash. The goal is to survive as long as possible using the meagre supplies all over the forest, while avoiding the cannibals.

7 Days to Die (2013)

Set after a nuclear world war, the player controls one of the survivors of by scavenging for supplies in a wasteland populated by zombies. Sounds easy, right? The zombies, however, get stronger as the days pass especially at night.

State of Decay (2013)

This survival game challenges the player not as a lone survivor, but as part of a group scavenging for limited resources in a zombie-infested land. This means setting up defenses against the attackers, but also managing group problems with the other survivors.

Minecraft (2011)

This is a different take on the word survival, because you will be dropped in a generated world where you decide what you want to do with your character. You can either build, create, explore, gather resources, or fight creatures.

Sheltered (2016)

Another post-apocalyptic game, the player must help a family survive in an underground facility threatened by starvation and radiation poisoning.

Don’t Starve (2013)

In the game, the player controls Wilson, who finds himself in an unfamiliar world populated by supernatural elements who are after him. At daytime, Wilson must gather resources to survive the terrors of the night.

Terraria (2011)

Another sandbox game, Terraria includes features such as crafting and building besides the usual formula of exploration plus combat. Completing goals means attracting more characters in player-built areas.

Rust (2013)

This multiplayer-only game will challenge players to gather and craft items in the area by commencing the adventure with only two items in hand; a torch and a rock. You may choose to join clans later to hunt animals and craft more items.

Stranded Deep (2015)

The player controls a character who crashed in an island in the Pacific and must try to survive using the resources of the ocean. What makes this game even more challenging is the cap on the number of items that your character is allowed to carry.

This War of Mine (2014)

The game is inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War of the early 90s and explores the effects of the conflict on the affected civilians. The decisions made in the game lead to different endings.
